Like it or not, it’s time we faced the facts: being handsome will make your life easier. While we can’t all look like Henry Golding, it doesn’t hurt to at least try to win some points in the looks department.

You might have Level 99 grooming mastery – but could you be neglecting just one major component? I’m talking about our diets, something often overlooked when it comes to improving our complexion. And as the age-old saying goes, you are what you eat.

Here are some suggestions on how you can work your way up the handsomeness scale, Seriously Man style.

1. Eat your greens

Going green is all the rage, and not without good reason. Green leafy vegetables like spinach, broccoli, watercress and kale are high in Vitamin A, helping to regulate and improve the shedding of dead skin cells. Maybe think twice about ignoring Mum’s warning about leaving your greens unfinished, if she’s still doing that.

2. On board the oat train

With oatmeal, you start each day on a fuller stomach for longer, and fight tendencies to overeat. Dad bods may be the ‘in’ thing now, but nothing reads ‘timeless’ like a fit, trim and lean bod will – and plus, you’ll always look well-fitted in shirts.

3. Fatten yourself up – the good way

The word ‘fats’ has such negative connotation – but there are good fats that you can consume.  Fatty fish like salmon help to calm inflammation, which can lead to a breakdown of collagen and elastin. Learn these two proteins well, and worship them, for they are the ones responsible for youthful looking skin. Now you can finally go from uncle to ‘hunkle’.

4. Speaking of protein…

Nobody likes a B.O.-ridden lad, so load up on protein to keep odours at bay. According to a recent study published in Evolution and Human Behavior, a man’s odour has a significant impact on his personal attractiveness. If that’s not good enough reason to eat more lean meat, tofu and eggs, we don’t know what is.

5. Vitamin C it to believe it

As if you hadn’t heard enough about the benefits of Vitamin C. As it turns out, Vitamin C is important for promoting collagen production, which in turn improves skin elasticity, keeping your skin aglow. Besides OD-ing on OJ, try incorporating other sources like capsicum and tomatoes into your diet to C a more remarkable face.

6. Learn to love green tea very matcha

Love your ‘do and spend extensive amounts of time getting your hair looking right? We understand the struggle – so we know you’ll want to protect your hair at all costs. Good news is, green tea helps with preserving hair loss in men by helping to stimulate testosterone, so you can rest easy on your hair loss anxieties.

7. Herbal chicken soup

Herbal soup? How does herbal soup have remotely any connection to being handsome? We hear your doubts – typically a remedy for pregnant women and the sick, you wouldn’t think of turning to herbs for a better complexion, but you’ll be amazed what it can do for your skin.

Rich in beta carotene, herbal soup helps fight against sun damage – perhaps a good buffer if you’re not already using sunscreen.

FYI, you should still use sunscreen.
